Yamunotri Gangotri Yatra
The Yamunotri and Gangotri Yatra is one of the most revered pilgrimage circuits in India, drawing thousands of devotees each year to the high-altitude temples dedicated to the sacred rivers Yamuna and Ganga. Located in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, these two shrines are integral to the Char Dham Yatra, which also includes Kedarnath and Badrinath. The journey offers a unique blend of spiritual significance, natural beauty, and the opportunity for physical and mental rejuvenation.
The yatra begins at Yamunotri, the source of the Yamuna River, situated at an altitude of 3,293 meters. The Yamunotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, is the focal point of this pilgrimage. Pilgrims bathe in the surya kund, a thermal spring, where they cook rice and potatoes in the hot waters, symbolizing purification. The temple is located amidst stunning Himalayan peaks, and visitors can also trek to the Yamunotri Glacier, the river’s actual source, which is a popular yet challenging trek for adventure seekers. The temple and surrounding area offer a serene and spiritually uplifting experience.
The next stop is Gangotri, the origin of the holy Ganges River. Situated at an altitude of 3,048 meters, the Gangotri Temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. Pilgrims come here to pay homage, take a dip in the sacred Ganges, and seek blessings. The river originates from the Gaumukh Glacier, which requires a strenuous trek, but for many, reaching this point is the ultimate spiritual achievement. The journey to Gangotri, like Yamunotri, is set against the backdrop of breathtaking landscapes, with dense forests, snow-capped peaks, and serene valleys offering a peaceful retreat from the chaos of everyday life.
Both the Yamunotri and Gangotri Yatra are significant spiritual journeys, offering devotees the chance to purify their souls while immersing themselves in the beauty of nature. The pilgrimage is open seasonally, from April to November, and is a must for anyone seeking a deeper connection to India’s spiritual heritage.

The best time for the Chardham Yatra is between May and June, and after the monsoons, from September to October. We avoid the monsoon season (July-August) due to landslides and unpredictable weather
The most common starting points for the Chardham Yatra are Haridwar and Rishikesh. Trek To Temple offers packages that start from both locations, providing convenience for pilgrims.
It’s recommended to engage in regular walking or light trekking to build stamina before starting the yatra. Practicing breathing exercises and maintaining a healthy diet are also helpful for adjusting to high altitudes.
